Clapperton's Spurfowl

Clapperton's Spurfowl, scientifically classified as Pternistis clappertoni, was formally described by the ornithologist John Edward Gray in 1837. The species was named in honor of the British explorer Hugh Clapperton, who conducted significant expeditions through North and West Africa in the early 19th century. As a member of the Phasianidae family, its nomenclature reflects the historical tradition of commemorating the explorers who introduced European science to the fauna of the Sahel and Sudanian savanna regions.

The bird is characterized by its distinct rounded wing and tail shapes, features that facilitate its short, explosive bursts of flight when disturbed in its grassland or scrub habitat.
