Coal-crested Finch

The Coal-crested Finch, scientifically identified as Charitospiza eucosma, is a unique songbird native to the cerrado grasslands of central South America. First described by the German ornithologist Georg Friedrich von Berlepsch in 1892, this species represents the sole member of its genus. Its evolutionary trajectory reflects an adaptation to open, shrubby habitats, characterized by a distinct, soot-colored crest that serves as a defining visual marker for the species.

The design of the bird's morphology—notably its rounded wings and slightly notched tail—facilitates short, maneuverable flights characteristic of its behavior in dense brush.
