Cobalt-rumped Parrotlet

The Cobalt-rumped Parrotlet, scientific name Forpus xanthopterygius, is a small Neotropical parrot native to a broad range of South America, spanning from Colombia and Venezuela to northern Argentina. Unlike species bred specifically for the pet trade, these birds exist in nature within diverse habitats including dry forests, scrublands, and forest edges. They were first formally described in the 19th century, fitting into the taxonomy of the genus Forpus, which is characterized by diminutive stature and specific sexual dimorphism.

Evolutionarily, the bird's rounded wing and tail shape are adaptations suited for agile, direct flight through dense canopy foliage rather than long-distance soaring. Taxonomically, the species is distinguished from its close relative, the Blue-winged Parrotlet, primarily by the specific cobalt or violet hues displayed on the rump and wing coverts of the males. Throughout ornithological history, the species has been studied for its social structure and complex vocalizations, which are typical of the Psittacidae family but notably quieter and more subtle than those of larger parrot species.
