Corn Crake

The Corn Crake, or Crex crex, is a secretive migratory bird historically associated with the agricultural landscapes of Europe and Western Asia. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a common inhabitant of hay meadows, where its distinctive, rasping call served as a reliable seasonal sound. Its evolutionary design, characterized by a rounded wing shape and a notched tail, evolved to facilitate its unique terrestrial lifestyle, allowing it to navigate dense vegetation with agility while remaining largely hidden from ground and aerial predators.

The species has experienced a significant decline in range due to the intensification of modern farming practices, which altered the timing and nature of hay harvesting. Conservation biologists have long studied the Crex crex to better understand the ecological requirements of grassland-nesting species. Today, the bird is regarded as an indicator species for the health of traditional meadow habitats, and its presence is the focus of targeted environmental protection efforts across the United Kingdom and Ireland to prevent its regional extinction.
