Cotton Pygmy-Goose

The Cotton Pygmy-Goose, scientifically identified as Nettapus coromandelianus, is one of the smallest wildfowl species in the world, belonging to the tribe Anatini within the family Anatidae. Native to South and Southeast Asia, as well as parts of northern Australia, this species evolved to thrive in well-vegetated, still freshwater bodies such as ponds, lakes, and flooded rice fields. Its evolutionary history is tied to the wetland ecosystems of the Indomalayan realm, where its small stature and distinctively shaped broad wings and rounded tail have allowed it to navigate dense aquatic vegetation with high maneuverability.

The species was first formally described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789. Ornithologists and bird enthusiasts have long noted its unique place in the waterfowl family, as it exhibits characteristics more similar to perching ducks than to true geese. Its design—marked by a compact, duck-like bill and specialized plumage—reflects an adaptation to a life spent largely on the surface of lily-covered waters, where it feeds primarily on aquatic plants and insects, garnering a reputation among naturalists for its shy demeanor and striking, iridescent plumage.
