Crested Treeswift

The Crested Treeswift, Hemiprocne coronata, is a member of the Hemiprocnidae family, a group of birds that diverged from the ancestors of modern swifts and hummingbirds. These birds evolved to thrive in the tropical forests and open woodlands of South and Southeast Asia, developing a distinct reliance on tall trees for both nesting and aerial foraging. Their evolutionary path resulted in a specialized morphology, characterized by their pointed, high-aspect-ratio wings that facilitate agile flight and their characteristic long, deeply forked tails that aid in complex maneuvering while hunting insects on the wing.

The species was formally described by the French ornithologist Samuel Tickell in 1833. The design of the bird—marked by its prominent crest and soft, grey-toned plumage—is an adaptation for camouflage within the light-dappled canopy of its forest habitat.
