Crocker Jungle Flycatcher

The Crocker Jungle Flycatcher, or Cyornis ruficrissa, is a passerine bird endemic to the mountain forests of Borneo. Identified as a distinct species within the Old World flycatcher family, its taxonomy has historically been subject to debate, often being considered a subspecies of the Mountain Jungle Flycatcher until morphological and vocal studies clarified its unique status. It occupies high-altitude montane habitats, where its specific wing and tail structure—notably pointed wings and a notched tail—allows for the agile, insect-catching flight patterns characteristic of its genus.

The bird was formally described by ornithologists documenting the biodiversity of the Crocker Range, from which it draws its name. Its design is an evolutionary adaptation to the dense, mist-covered canopy of the Bornean highlands. Because it thrives in specialized, remote environments, it remains a species of interest for conservationists and avian researchers studying island biogeography and the complex speciation processes that have shaped the wildlife of Southeast Asia.
