Dark-eyed Junco

The Dark-eyed Junco, Junco hyemalis, is a species of sparrow-like songbird widely distributed across North America. Taxonomically, the species has a complex history, as it was once categorized into several distinct species—such as the Oregon, Slate-colored, and White-winged juncos—before researchers determined they were regional variations of a single, highly adaptable species. These birds are a quintessential sight in coniferous and mixed forests, particularly during the winter months when they migrate southward in search of food.

The design of the Junco, sculpted by natural selection, is defined by its distinctive morphology, including rounded wings for short-distance flight and a notched tail used for stabilization during foraging.
