Esmeraldas Antbird

The Esmeraldas antbird (Sipia nigricauda) was formally described in the late 19th century, emerging from an era of intensive ornithological exploration in the Neotropics. It is native to the humid forests of the Chocó region, spanning parts of Colombia and Ecuador. Its classification reflects the broader scientific efforts to document the high levels of endemism found within these dense, rain-shadowed ecosystems, where avian diversity is uniquely shaped by extreme precipitation patterns.
