Fatu Hiva Monarch

The Fatu Hiva monarch, or Pomarea whitneyi, is a critically endangered flycatcher endemic to the island of Fatu Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. It was first formally described by scientists in the early 20th century during expeditions seeking to document the unique avian biodiversity of the Pacific archipelago, a period defined by a growing urgency to catalog species before the encroaching pressures of invasive predators and habitat loss could irrevocably alter island ecosystems.
