Finn's Weaver

Finn's Weaver, scientifically known as Ploceus megarhynchus, was formally described by A.O. Hume in 1874. It is a highly localized and specialized member of the weaverbird family, native to the restricted grasslands and wetlands of the Himalayan foothills in India and Nepal. The species was named after Frank Finn, a prominent ornithologist and one-time Deputy Superintendent of the Indian Museum in Calcutta, who played a significant role in documenting avian life in South Asia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The bird is characterized by its distinct physical features, specifically its pointed wing structure and notched tail, which facilitate its movement through tall grasses. As a species categorized as vulnerable due to habitat loss, it has become a subject of great interest within the ornithological community. Conservation efforts have focused on protecting the tall grasslands that the species requires for breeding, a context that has elevated its status as an indicator species for the health of its specific, fragile ecosystem.
