Flamecrest

The Flamecrest, Regulus goodfellowi, is a small passerine bird endemic to the high-altitude mountain forests of Taiwan. It was first described by the British ornithologist W. R. Ogilvie-Grant in 1906, named in honor of the collector Walter Goodfellow, who was instrumental in documenting the avian diversity of the region during the early 20th century. Evolutionary biologists classify it as a member of the kinglet family, noting that its distinct appearance—characterized by a vibrant crimson crown and bold facial markings—likely evolved as a result of its long-term isolation in Taiwan’s temperate montane habitats.

The bird's physiology is highly adapted to life in the dense understory and canopy of coniferous forests. Its rounded wing shape provides the maneuverability required for foraging among thick branches, while its notched tail aids in quick, precise changes in direction. Because of its restricted range and specialized habitat requirements, the species has long been a subject of interest for ornithologists and conservationists focused on island biogeography and the unique biodiversity of the Central Mountain Range.
