Flores Shortwing

The Flores shortwing, Brachypteryx floris, is a passerine bird endemic to the island of Flores in Indonesia. Identified as a distinct species within the flycatcher family, its classification has historically been subject to debate, as it was long considered a subspecies of the Javan shortwing before genetic research and morphological analysis led ornithologists to recognize it as a unique taxon. It thrives in the dense, moist undergrowth of montane forests, a habitat that has become increasingly fragmented, contributing to its status as a species of conservation interest.

The physical characteristics of the bird reflect its adaptation to a secretive, ground-dwelling lifestyle in thick forest cover.
