Geoffroy's Daggerbill

Geoffroy's Daggerbill, or the Wedge-billed Hummingbird, was formally described by the French naturalist Philippe-Jacques Renié de Bourcier in 1848. The species is named in honor of the French zoologist Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, reflecting the nineteenth-century tradition of documenting the biodiversity of the Andean cloud forests during European expeditions to South America. It is a member of the Trochilidae family and is primarily distinguished by its unique, wedge-shaped bill, which is an evolutionary adaptation for foraging on nectar and insects in dense, high-altitude vegetation.

The bird's design is defined by its compact, specialized morphology, featuring pointed wings that allow for rapid, agile flight through thick understory foliage and a distinctively notched tail. Taxonomists and ornithologists generally categorize the species based on subtle plumage variations across its range, which extends from the northern Andes of Venezuela and Colombia down to Peru and Bolivia.
