Gold-ringed Tanager

The Gold-ringed Tanager (Bangsia aureocincta) was first described by the ornithologist Hellmayr in 1910. Native to the humid montane forests of the northern and central Western Andes in Colombia, this species occupies a highly restricted range. It is defined by its striking yellow wing-bar and a distinctive golden ring around the eye, which gives the bird its common name. Its survival is intrinsically linked to the preservation of undisturbed cloud forests, as it thrives in the dense understory and mid-strata of these specific environments.

The design of the bird, shaped by evolutionary pressures, reflects a specialized adaptation to life in dense vegetation. Its rounded wings and rounded tail are characteristic of species that favor short, agile bursts of flight through thick foliage rather than long-distance migration. This morphological profile allows the tanager to navigate the complex, cluttered architecture of the Andean canopy with precision.
