Gorgeted Sunangel

The Gorgeted Sunangel (Heliangelus strophianus) is a species of hummingbird endemic to the humid montane forests of the western Andes in Ecuador and Colombia. It was first described by the ornithologist John Gould in 1846, who was renowned for his comprehensive studies of hummingbirds and his detailed illustrations. As part of the broader Trochilidae family, its classification reflects the 19th-century scientific fervor for cataloging the high-altitude biodiversity of the Neotropics.
