Gough Moorhen

The Gough Moorhen, Gallinula comeri, is a flightless rail endemic to Gough Island in the South Atlantic. It was first described in the late 19th century following the 1888 visit of the HMS Osprey, though it is closely related to the common moorhen. Its evolutionary path is a classic study in island biogeography, where, in the absence of mammalian predators, the species evolved to become flightless, favoring a rounded wing shape and short tail suited for life in the dense fern-bush and bog habitats of its isolated volcanic home.

The bird was introduced to Tristan da Cunha in 1956 by conservationists as a measure to protect the species from potential extinction, should a disaster strike its singular native island. This deliberate translocation provided scientists with a rare opportunity to observe the bird’s adaptation to a new environment. While the species is of significant interest to ornithologists studying island evolution, it is not a commercially traded item, but rather a protected wild species whose history is defined by the fragile balance of oceanic island ecosystems.
