Gray-headed Swamphen

The Gray-headed Swamphen, Porphyrio poliocephalus, belongs to the diverse Rallidae family, which includes rails, gallinules, and coots. Historically categorized as a subspecies of the Purple Swamphen, it was reclassified as a distinct species due to its specific morphological traits, including its distinctively gray head and coloration. These birds evolved primarily in wetlands across the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, and southern China, thriving in environments defined by dense reed beds and floating vegetation.
