Great-billed Seed-Finch

The Great-billed Seed-Finch, Sporophila maximiliani, is a South American passerine bird historically documented in regions ranging from Brazil to parts of northern South America. Its classification is rooted in 19th-century ornithological surveys, named in honor of Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied, a German explorer who conducted extensive natural history research in Brazil during the early 1800s. The species is characterized by its robust, specialized bill, which reflects an evolutionary adaptation to crushing hard seeds in its native gallery forest and wetland habitats.

The bird's design is defined by its subtle, monochromatic plumage—predominantly black in males with a distinct white speculum—and its structurally sound morphology, including its rounded wings and notched tail.
