Great Spotted Kiwi

The Great Spotted Kiwi, or roroa, is the largest of the five extant kiwi species and is endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. Within the context of natural history, it evolved in total isolation for millions of years, leading to its characteristic biological traits, including vestigial wings and a rounded, lack-of-tail appearance that distinguishes it from its avian cousins. It was first documented by European science in the 19th century, serving as a focal point for researchers studying unique evolutionary adaptations in island environments.

The species holds a deep cultural significance for the Māori people, who regard the roroa as a taonga, or treasure, protected under the Kaitiakitanga principle of guardianship.
