Guadalcanal Dwarf-Kingfisher

The Guadalcanal Dwarf-Kingfisher, or Ceyx nigromaxilla, is an elusive bird species endemic to the island of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. It was historically considered a subspecies of the North Solomons dwarf-kingfisher until molecular phylogenetic studies and morphological analysis, particularly of its distinct bill coloration and plumage patterns, led to its recognition as a separate species. Its evolution within the isolated, dense rainforests of the archipelago has resulted in the characteristic rounded wings and short tail that distinguish its flight profile from related kingfisher species in the region.
