House Finch

The house finch, native to the western United States and Mexico, was introduced to the eastern United States in 1940. Originally sold illegally as 'Hollywood finches' in New York City pet stores, the birds were released into the wild by vendors attempting to avoid prosecution during a crackdown on protected migratory species. This inadvertent introduction allowed the population to expand rapidly across North America, demonstrating an exceptional adaptability to both suburban and urban environments.

The species is distinguished by its rounded wing shape and notched tail, features that contribute to its characteristic fluttering flight pattern. Taxonomically classified as Haemorhous mexicanus, it has become one of the most familiar backyard birds in the country. Ornithologists often note the male's vibrant red coloration, which is derived from carotenoid pigments in its diet, a biological trait that has made it a subject of extensive study regarding sexual selection and environmental health.
