Itatiaia Spinetail

The Itatiaia Spinetail (Asthenes moreirae) is an endemic bird species found in the high-altitude grasslands of the Itatiaia National Park in Brazil. Identified within the Furnariidae family, this bird occupies a unique ecological niche above the tree line in the Mantiqueira Mountains. It was formally described in the early 20th century, emerging from an era of intensive ornithological exploration in the Atlantic Forest region, where scientists sought to catalog the diverse, isolated species residing in the peaks of the Serra da Mantiqueira.

The physical design of this bird is a result of evolutionary adaptation to the harsh, wind-swept environment of the high campos. Its pointed wings allow for efficient flight amidst unpredictable mountain gusts, while its distinctively notched tail is a hallmark of the genus, aiding in stabilization and maneuverability through low-growing vegetation.
