Where it came from
The Jocotoco Antpitta was unknown to science until 1997, when ornithologists Robert Ridgely and Marcus Braun discovered the species in the cloud forests of southern Ecuador. Its discovery was a landmark event in modern ornithology, as the bird’s distinctive low-frequency call had previously gone unidentified, highlighting the biodiversity hidden within the fragmented high-altitude ecosystems of the Andes.
The species is named for the local name of its song, 'jocotoco,' which resonates through the bamboo understory where the bird resides. Because of its highly specialized habitat requirements and extremely limited range, the species became the flagship for the creation of the Tapichalaca Biological Reserve, established by the Jocotoco Foundation to ensure the survival of this elusive, ground-dwelling bird.
