Laughing Owl

The Laughing Owl, or Ninox albifacies, was a species of hawk-owl endemic to New Zealand. It earned its common name from the peculiar, laughter-like calls it emitted, which were noted by early European settlers. Once relatively common across the North and South Islands, the species experienced a rapid decline during the 19th century due to the introduction of invasive mammalian predators, such as rats and stoats, and extensive habitat modification for agriculture.

The physical specimens that reside in museum collections today were primarily sourced during the mid-to-late 1800s as the species approached extinction. They represent a unique branch of strigiform evolution, distinguished by their brownish-yellow plumage and the distinct, haunting vocalizations that captivated ornithologists like Walter Buller. These preserved specimens remain the only tangible legacy of a bird that was last officially recorded in the wild in 1914, serving as a somber historical benchmark for New Zealand's avian conservation history.
