LeConte's Sparrow

LeConte's Sparrow was formally described by John James Audubon in 1843, who named the species in honor of his friend and fellow naturalist John Lawrence Le Conte. The bird is native to the wet meadows and marshes of North America, particularly within the central grasslands during the breeding season. It belongs to the Ammospiza genus, a group of sparrows specifically adapted to life in dense, grassy habitats where their secretive behavior often hides them from casual observers.

The physical design of the species is defined by its cryptic coloration, featuring a warm, ochre-washed breast and a sharply defined gray-and-white crown stripe that helps it blend into the tall stalks of its environment. Its rounded wings and notched tail are key physiological adaptations for short, darting flights through dense vegetation. While it was once considered a rare find due to its elusive nature, modern field ornithology has provided a clearer understanding of its migratory patterns and specialized habitat requirements.
