Lesser Melampitta

The Lesser Melampitta, Melampitta lugubris, is a terrestrial songbird endemic to the montane forests of New Guinea. Its classification has historically been a subject of ornithological intrigue, as its physical characteristics—specifically its rounded wings and tail—place it within a unique niche of forest-floor dwellers that rely more on agility within dense undergrowth than on sustained flight.
