Lesson's Seedeater

Lesson's Seedeater, or Sporophila bouvronides, is a small passerine bird native to the northern regions of South America and parts of the southern Caribbean. First described by the French naturalist René Lesson in the early 19th century, the species is named in his honor. It occupies a specific ecological niche in grasslands, savanna edges, and secondary growth, where it primarily feeds on the seeds of grasses, a diet reflected in the functional, conical shape of its beak.

The species is physically characterized by a subtle, rounded wing structure suited for short, agile flights through dense vegetation, complemented by a distinctively notched tail that aids in maneuverability. Ornithologists and researchers note that the species was historically grouped with similar seedeaters, but its unique vocalizations and subtle plumage variations have helped cement its status as a distinct member of the Thraupidae family. Its design reflects an evolutionary specialization for efficiency in the tropical environments it inhabits.
