Lita Woodpecker

The Lita Woodpecker, scientifically classified as Piculus litae, was formally described by the ornithologist Walter Goodfellow in 1902. It is a distinct species native to the humid forests of the Chocó region, spanning parts of northwestern Ecuador and southwestern Colombia. Its discovery emerged during a period of intense biological exploration in the Andean foothills, where scientists sought to document the high levels of endemism in the dense, rainy habitats of the Pacific slope.

The species is characterized by its broad wings and pointed tail, which are functional adaptations for navigating the thick foliage and maneuvering along tree trunks within its narrow ecological niche.
