Long-crested Eagle

The long-crested eagle, scientifically classified as Lophaetus occipitalis, is a medium-sized bird of prey native to sub-Saharan Africa. Evoluntionary biology identifies this species as a unique member of the Accipitridae family, characterized by its distinctive, long, shaggy crest of feathers that can be raised when the bird is agitated or displays alertness. It typically inhabits forest edges, plantations, and woodland areas near water, where its specific physical adaptations, including broad, rounded wings and a short, pointed tail, allow it to maneuver effectively through dense vegetation while hunting for small mammals.

The bird was first formally described by the French ornithologist François Le Vaillant in the late 18th century. Its evolutionary design—notably its dark, almost black plumage and contrasting white wing patches visible during flight—has long fascinated naturalists documenting African avian diversity. Unlike larger eagles, the long-crested eagle has evolved a highly specialized hunting strategy, often waiting perched quietly in the canopy to swoop down on rodents and shrews, a behavioral pattern that has been widely studied in tropical ecology as an example of sedentary hunting efficiency.
