Long-tailed Woodnymph

The Long-tailed Woodnymph, Thalurania watertonii, was first described by the French ornithologist Jules Bourcier in 1847. It is named in honor of the English naturalist and explorer Charles Waterton, who famously traveled extensively through the rainforests of South America during the early 19th century. The species is endemic to the Atlantic forests of northeastern Brazil, a region where habitat fragmentation has made it a subject of significant conservation interest for ornithologists and biodiversity researchers.

This hummingbird is distinguished by its deep, iridescent green plumage and its notably long, deeply forked tail, which gives the species its common name. The aesthetic design of the bird reflects its specialized evolution within the dense understory of the humid forest. While not designed by human hands, its biological characteristics have been documented extensively in classic 19th-century taxonomic literature, where its striking color patterns and structural form have been rendered by historical natural history illustrators aiming to capture its delicate, ethereal appearance.
