Where it came from

The maned owl (Jubula lettii) is a rare and elusive nocturnal bird native to the lowland rainforests of Central and West Africa. It was formally described by the German ornithologist Ernst Hartert in 1904, based on specimens collected in Liberia. Its name reflects the distinctive, elongated feathers around its neck that mimic a mane, a unique morphological feature that distinguishes it from other members of the Strigidae family.

Designed by nature as a forest-dwelling specialist, the maned owl possesses broad, rounded wings and a rounded tail, adaptations that allow for silent, agile flight through dense vegetation. Because it is highly secretive and difficult to observe in its natural habitat, it remains one of the least studied owl species in the world. Its classification has historically been a subject of interest for evolutionary biologists, who note its specialized plumage as an example of avian adaptation to low-light, closed-canopy environments.
