Maratua Shama

The Maratua Shama, scientifically classified as Copsychus barbouri, is an endemic passerine bird restricted to the small island of Maratua in the Derawan Archipelago of Indonesia. It was first described in the early 20th century, emerging from the era of colonial-era zoological exploration when naturalists were cataloging the distinct avian biodiversity of Southeast Asian islands. It evolved in isolation, leading to its status as a distinct species separated from the widespread White-rumped Shama.

The bird is characterized by a unique morphology that reflects its specialized island habitat, including rounded wings that suggest an evolutionary shift toward maneuverability in dense understory rather than long-distance dispersal. Its pointed tail serves as a hallmark of its silhouette, aiding in balance and rapid movement.
