Masked Lapwing

The Masked Lapwing, scientifically classified as Vanellus miles, is a ground-dwelling bird native to northern and eastern Australia, New Zealand, and parts of New Guinea. It is widely recognized for its distinctive yellow facial wattles and the sharp, yellow carpal spurs on its wings, which it utilizes for territorial defense. Evolutionarily, these features developed to suit the species' preference for open grasslands, parklands, and agricultural areas, where its camouflaged, mottled brown plumage provides essential protection while foraging for invertebrates.

First formally described by Dutch zoologist Pieter Boddaert in 1783, the species was historically categorized into two subspecies—the 'masked' (miles) and the 'masked' (novaehollandiae)—reflecting their differing facial structures. Ornithologists and bird enthusiasts have long noted their bold behavior, particularly during nesting season, when they are known to perform aggressive dive-bombing displays to protect their ground-laid eggs. This trait has cemented their status as a familiar, if occasionally intimidating, presence in urban and rural Australian landscapes.
