Mees's Nightjar

Mees's Nightjar, scientifically identified as Caprimulgus meesi, is an elusive bird species endemic to the island of Sumba in Indonesia. It was formally described as a distinct species in 2004 by ornithologist René Dekker, who named it in honor of the Dutch ornithologist Gerlof Mees. The classification of this species emerged from ongoing efforts to clarify the taxonomy of nightjars in the Wallacea region, highlighting the unique biodiversity contained within the isolated ecosystems of the Lesser Sunda Islands.

The bird is characterized by its distinct physical traits, including rounded wings and a notched tail, which facilitate its nocturnal, aerial hunting patterns. Its evolutionary history is deeply tied to the specific forest habitats of Sumba, where its plumage and vocalizations have evolved to provide effective camouflage and communication in dense canopy environments. Because of its localized range and the challenges of observing nocturnal species, it remains a subject of ongoing study for avian biologists interested in island biogeography.
