Meves's Starling

Meves's starling, scientifically identified as Lamprotornis mevesii, was first described by the German zoologist Gustav Hartlaub in 1857. It was named in honor of the Swedish ornithologist Friedrich Wilhelm Meves, who contributed significantly to the study of bird skins and collections during the mid-19th century. The species is native to the wooded savannas and riverine forests of Southern Africa, thriving in regions like the Zambezi basin where its specific habitat needs are met.

The bird is distinguished within the Lamprotornis genus by its particularly long, graduated, and pointed tail, which sets it apart from the shorter-tailed starlings of the same family. Its iridescent plumage, which shifts from metallic greens to deep purples depending on the light, is a hallmark of the glossy starling group. Ornithologists appreciate the species for its complex social behavior and its distinct, melodic vocalizations, which are often heard during the breeding season in its restricted range.
