New Zealand Pigeon

The New Zealand pigeon, or kererū, is an endemic species that holds a foundational position within the Aotearoa ecosystem. Evolutionarily, it branched off as a distinct lineage following the isolation of the New Zealand landmass, adapting over millennia to thrive in dense podocarp forests. Its physical characteristics, including its rounded wings and tail, are specialized adaptations for navigating complex, cluttered canopy environments rather than long-distance migratory flight.

The bird is culturally significant as a taonga species to Māori, featuring prominently in oral traditions and serving as a traditional food source and symbolic figure.
