Orange-winged Pytilia

The Orange-winged Pytilia, Pytilia afra, is a passerine bird native to sub-Saharan Africa, ranging across regions from Ethiopia and the southern Sudan down to northern parts of South Africa. As a member of the Estrildidae family, this species has long been documented by ornithologists for its specific habitat preferences, typically favoring dry bushveld and areas with dense undergrowth where its cryptic plumage allows it to forage undisturbed.

The species was formally described by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789.
