Oriental Pratincole

The Oriental Pratincole (Glareola maldivarum) is a migratory bird belonging to the family Glareolidae. It was scientifically described by Johann Reinhold Forster in 1795. These birds are primarily found across South and Southeast Asia, characterized by their graceful, swallow-like flight, which is facilitated by their distinctively long, pointed wings and deeply forked tails. Unlike most waders, they are frequently observed catching insects on the wing, a behavioral trait that reflects their specialized adaptation to open grasslands, marshes, and agricultural fields.

The evolutionary design of the Oriental Pratincole serves as a prime example of avian functional anatomy suited for aerial hawking.
