Pale-shouldered Cicadabird

The Pale-shouldered Cicadabird, Edolisoma dohertyi, is an endemic passerine bird native to the islands of Sumba and Flores in the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia. It was formally described in 1896 by the German ornithologist Ernst Hartert, who named the species in honor of the American naturalist and explorer William Doherty. The bird inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and montane forests, where it remains a significant subject of study for biogeographers examining the unique avian distribution patterns of the Wallacea region.

The bird's design reflects its adaptation to dense forest canopies, characterized by its distinctive rounded wings and a pointed tail that aid in agile flight. As a member of the Campephagidae family, the species exhibits a subtle, cryptic plumage coloration that allows it to blend into the shadows of the forest interior. While it is not a designer object in the human sense, its evolutionary trajectory has been shaped by the isolation of the Indonesian archipelago, resulting in a specialized morphology that remains a fascination for ornithologists documenting the biodiversity of the region.
