Papuan Treecreeper

The Papuan treecreeper, Cormobates placens, is a member of the Climacteridae family, a group of birds endemic to the Australasian region. Evolutionary biologists categorize these birds as specialized bark-foragers, having diverged from other passerines to exploit the vertical surfaces of trees in the montane rainforests of New Guinea. Their development of a rounded wing shape and a distinctive, stiff, pointed tail serves as an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through dense foliage and bracing against trunks while they probe for insects.

The species was formally described by the ornithologist Ernst Mayr in the early 20th century, a period marked by intense biological surveys in the interior of New Guinea.
