Pied Cormorant

The Pied Cormorant, Phalacrocorax varius, is a medium-sized waterbird native to the coasts and islands of Australia and New Zealand. It belongs to the broader cormorant family, Phalacrocoracidae, which has long been documented in natural history records for its distinct evolutionary adaptation as a pursuit-diving marine predator. The species was formally described by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789, emerging from the era of late 18th-century taxonomic classification when European explorers were cataloging the unique avian life of the Southern Hemisphere.
