Pied Water-Tyrant

The Pied Water-Tyrant, Fluvicola pica, is a member of the tyrant flycatcher family, primarily inhabiting the wetlands and river edges of northern South America. Its distinct black-and-white plumage evolved as a form of disruptive coloration, allowing it to blend into the flickering light and dark shadows cast by riparian vegetation, which protects it from predators while it hunts for small insects over the water.

The species was formally described by the French polymath Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, in the eighteenth century. Ornithologically, it is noted for its characteristic broad wings and notched tail, features that support its agile, fluttering flight pattern.
