Plumed Guineafowl

The Plumed Guineafowl, Guttera plumifera, is a member of the Numididae family native to the dense primary forests of Central Africa. Unlike its more widely distributed relative, the Helmeted Guineafowl, this species is defined by its distinctively ornate crest of long, curly black feathers. Evolutionarily, these birds have adapted to the shadowed environments of the Congo Basin, where their rounded wings and tails facilitate rapid, short-distance flight through tangled undergrowth, a hallmark of their specialized ecological niche.

First described by ornithologists in the mid-19th century, the bird represents a specific evolutionary divergence within the Guineafowl lineage. Its design is characterized by a striking contrast between its dark, spotted plumage and the bare, bright blue skin of its neck.
