Puerto Rican Amazon

The Puerto Rican Amazon, scientifically known as Amazona vittata, is the only extant parrot native to Puerto Rico. Its history is inextricably linked to the island's conservation efforts, as the species faced near-extinction in the 20th century due to habitat loss and severe weather events like hurricanes. These birds were historically central to the island's ecological identity, inhabiting the dense forests of the Luquillo Mountains and relying on tree cavities for nesting.

The species is physically characterized by its broad, robust wings and a distinctly rounded tail, adaptations that aid in maneuverability within its lush, tropical environment. Because the population dropped to fewer than 20 individuals in the 1970s, the bird has been the focus of intensive recovery programs, including captive breeding initiatives. These efforts represent a significant historical attempt to prevent the total loss of a unique avian lineage through human intervention and habitat restoration.
