Where it came from

The Purple-backed Sunbeam, Aglaeactis aliciae, is a species of hummingbird endemic to the high-altitude scrub forests of the Marañón Valley in northern Peru. First described by the French naturalist Osbert Salvin in 1874, the bird was named in honor of Alice Maria Jane Gray, the wife of British ornithologist George Robert Gray. Its discovery emerged from the nineteenth-century tradition of European expeditions to the Andes, where biologists sought to categorize the extreme avian diversity of the isolated inter-Andean valleys.

The species is distinguished by its specialized anatomy, featuring pointed wings and a distinctively notched tail, both of which are evolutionary adaptations for precise navigation through dense, high-elevation vegetation. The plumage is notably somber compared to other sunbeams, characterized by iridescent, dusky-purple tones that are only revealed in direct sunlight. Because of its restricted range and habitat loss, the bird has been a subject of significant interest for conservationists monitoring the fragile ecology of its unique high-altitude home.
