Rarotonga Starling

The Rarotonga starling, also known as the Rarotonga starling or Mauke starling, is an endemic passerine bird species restricted to the island of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. First described in 1890 by Richard Bowdler Sharpe, the species emerged from a period of intense European biological exploration in the Pacific, where ornithologists sought to catalog the distinct insular species resulting from geographical isolation. It remains a subject of study primarily for its evolutionary history as a member of the diverse Aplonis genus, which occupies a wide range of ecological niches across the South Pacific.
