Red-knobbed Coot

The red-knobbed coot, known scientifically as Fulica cristata, is a distinctive member of the Rallidae family, primarily native to regions of Africa and parts of the Iberian Peninsula. Its common name is derived from the two prominent, fleshy red caruncles or knobs located on the forehead, a feature that distinguishes it from its more widespread relative, the common coot. Evolutionarily, the species has adapted to various freshwater habitats, relying on its broad wings for short-distance flight and a rounded tail for stability during maneuvering, traits that support its largely aquatic lifestyle.

The species was first formally described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789. Ornithologically, it is noted for its behavioral similarities to other coots, yet it maintains a specific ecological niche in open wetlands and lakes. Design-wise, its appearance is defined by striking slate-gray plumage contrasted against a stark white frontal shield and the signature red knobs, which become more vivid during the breeding season.
