Red-masked Parakeet

The Red-masked Parakeet, or Psittacara erythrogenys, is native to the arid forests and scrublands of southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru. These birds were historically documented by naturalists in the 19th century, with their distinct coloration—defined by the vivid red plumage on the head—becoming a recognizable marker of the species within the Psittacidae family. Their physical morphology, including a distinctively rounded wing shape and a pointed tail, facilitates agile navigation through the dense canopy and arid woodland environments they inhabit.

The species gained international attention through the 20th century as part of the exotic pet trade, leading to a decline in their wild population and subsequent conservation efforts. They are particularly noted for their intelligence and vocalizations, traits that made them popular subjects for ornithological study.
