Red-rumped Woodpecker

The Red-rumped Woodpecker, scientifically classified as Veniliornis kirkii, was first described by the naturalist Alfred Malherbe in 1845. It belongs to the diverse family Picidae and is primarily found in the humid forests and secondary growth areas of northern South America and southern Central America. Its taxonomy reflects the broader evolutionary history of the genus Veniliornis, which consists of small, specialized woodpeckers adapted to life in dense tropical canopies.
